himself. >> when you see people with a vest, they're usually in a war zone. >> glor: and, steve hartman reunites with an unlikely group of friends, who bonded over barbecue. >> we can show the world that it's all right to be kind, and maybe the world a better place. >> glor: good evening. i'm jeff glor. and this is our western edition. police announced today an iraq war veteran accused of intentionally plowing his car into a crowd, was targeting muslims. it happened this week in sunnyvale, california, near san francisco. the disturbing allegation came today as isaiah peoples appeared in court. we also learned the most girl, is in a coma. carter evans has more from our l.a. bureau tonight. carter, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, jeff, the stunning news came this heternoon from the sunnyvale police chief. he says the apparent target was an indian family. >> based on our investigation, new evidence shows that the defendant intentionally targeted

the victims based on their race ced his belief that they were of the muslim faith. >> reporter: the suspect, isaiah peoples, appeared in court today. he did not enter a plea. peoples is charged with eight counts of attempted murder after police say he drove straight into the crowd, injuring eight. he was apparently on the way to onble study. now, they say there is no evidence he even tried to slow down. peoples is an iraq war veteran faose family says he suffers from p.t.s.d. his lawyer plans to dispute that the crash was intentional. he'll argue the tragedy was the result of a mental disorder, and reoples will be back in court next month. jeff. >> glor: such a disturbing story. carter evans with the latest from los angeles. mrter, thank you very much. it took police in colorado more dan half a day to determine how many people died in a chain- reaction crash. the damage and fire was that bad. it took far less time for them to pin the blame on the driver of a truck.

at least 28 cars and trucks were involved in this. four people were killed, six sent to hospitals. herry petersen is at the scene. >> reporter: it looked more like okwar zone than a major interstate. with fuel tanks and burning tires setting off multiple explosions. the fires fed in part by the massive load of lumber strewn r ross the highway from the semi trailer that may have caused all of this. o e big rig survived the crash, only to be destroyed by flames. >> the whole front of my car was blown away. the glass was everywhere. all the airbags. >> reporter: leslie maddox e ought the driver was going up to 90 miles an hour. >> my arm was broken. h was hanging down, and blood just oozing from my face. >> reporter: what would have happened, leslie, if people had not run up to your car and eelped you out? >> i would have died. i would have died, because i wouldn't have got out of the car myself. >> reporter: good samaritans like darin barton, who had been panhandling at the side of the highway, were among those who pulled victims to safety.

hosi'm no hero. tyjust did what i hope anybody else would have done if i was in there. >> reporter: josh mccutchen may have captured the raci truck just before it slammed into the cars and trucks ahead. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: police charged the semi driver, 23-year-old rogel lazaro aguilera-mederos of houston, with four counts of vehicular manslaughter. they said they found no drugs or alcohol in his system. one of the hardest problems may be identifying the dead. ty countryman is with the ikewood police department. >> the carnage was significant. just unbelievable. >> reporter: officials hope to reopen the eastbound lanes some time tomorrow, restoring normal taffic to a major highway that carries people and products across the american west. jeff. >> glor: unbelievable is right. all right, barry petersen, thank you very much. deadly storms that swept through the south are bearing down on ste east tonight.

a tornado watch is posted in new jersey, where lightning lit up the sky today. in virginia, heavy rain and strong winds knocked down trees. more than 600 college students egd staffers are under quarantine orders in los angeles tonight. public health officials are trying to stop a measles outbreak that hit a 25-year high in the u.s. this week. and president trump weighed in on vaccinations today. here's paula reid. >> they have to get the shots. >> reporter: president trump broke his silence today on the historic measles outbreak spreading across the u.s. >> the vaccinations are so important. >> reporter: the c.d.c. reports 695 cases in 22 states, the greatest number since measles was declared eliminated in the u.s. in 2000. the cases are primarily the result of a few large outbreaks, one in washington state and two in new york, that started in late 2018. two southern california colleges are turning to quarantines. at cal state l.a., 106 staff and

550 students are under quarantine after possible measles exposure at the campus library. u.c.l.a. now only has one student isolated. >> this is really going around now. they have to get their shots. >> reporter: the president's remarks appear to be an about- face on his previous claims linking child vaccinations to autism. numerous studies have shown no link between receiving vaccines and autism, but in a 2015 g.o.p. p.bate, candidate trump cited anecdotal evidence linking the two. >> just the other day, two years old, two and a half years old, the child, a beautiful child, nent to have the vaccine, and came back, and a week later, got ustremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic. >> reporter: mr. trump added he was in favor of spreading out the vaccine schedule for young children. >> it has gotten totally out of aontrol. i am totally in favor of vaccines, but i want smaller

doses over a longer period of time. heendoacrlier thisepartment ofes hiek as a safe way to prevent the measles, and recommended that people get vaccinated on the appropriate schedule. the white house says that it's in touch with h.h.s., and the c.d.c. as it continues to monitor this outbreak. jeff. he glor: paula reid, thank you very much. id age-old question was raised today in the 2020 presidential sace. the president was asked, how old is too old for a president? and one of his opponents, joe biden, offered his opinion. here's ed o'keefe. >> i think we beat him easily. >> reporter: president trump today asked about newly declared dmocratic presidential candidate joe biden. first, the president called biden "sleepy." now the 72-year-old president is rvising doubts about the 76- year-old's fitness to serve.>>mn lookjo d'tabouhim.n't ow. >> reporter: biden responded hours later on "the view." >> if he looks young and vibrant

( laughter ) >> reporter: biden launched his campaign thursday by calling out trump's comments in the wake of 2e 2017 white supremacist rally und violence in charlottesville, virginia. >> he said there were-- quote-- some very fine people on both sides. sa reporter: today, the president said biden had it wrong. >> i was talking about people that went because they felt very strongly about the monument to robert e. lee, a great general, whether you like it or not. >> reporter: lee led the confederate army during the civil war. biden, meanwhile, faced fresh questions about his interactions with women, and his treatment of anita hill during the 1991 confirmation hearings for supreme court justice clarence thomas. biden was chairman of the judiciary committee at the time and has faced criticism for how are panel handled hill's accusation of sexual harassment by thomas. today, biden declined to directly apologize to hill. >> i am sorry she was treated

the way she was treated. i wish we could have figured out a better way to get this thing done. >> reporter: he also avoided a full apology when asked about recent accusations by women that he made them feel uncomfortable. >> i have to be-- and everybody has to be-- much more aware of the private space of men and women. it's not just women, but primarily women. and-- and i am much more cognizant of that. >> reporter: biden's campaign said it raised $6.3 million in its first 24 hours from nearly m7,000 people in all 50 states. 00at's a new one-day record topping fellow contenders beto o'rourke and bernie sanders. rkff? >> glor: ed o'keefe for us in r shington. ed, thank you. a russian woman who admitted to being a secret agent for the kremlin was sentenced today to 18 months in prison. maria butina pleaded guilty for conspiring to infiltrate the national rifle association. she has already served nine shnths and will be deported after serving another nine anths. mo president trump went on stage at the n.r.a. convention in

nvdianapolis, a man in the crowd threw a cell phone toward the president today and was grabbed by secret service agents. he is under investigation. the president later signed a letter telling congress he is withdrawing the u.s. from an arms treaty. the n.r.a. was against that agreement signed in 2013. it was never ratified by congress. the n.r.a. convention is being held during a national debate over laws that allow concealed firearms to be carried on some college campuses. in our series "eye on america," nikki battiste visits the university of kansas, a school divided over this issue. >> this is a smith & wesson 40. >> reporter: is this loaded? >> no. >> reporter: but you have it on you while you're on campus. >> yeah, so i will put it here, and angle it up a little bit. >> reporter: you have to keep it concealed. >> yeah. >> when you see people with a vest, they're usually in a war zone. >> reporter: what looks like a college student and a professor

gearing up for battle is really their preparation for class. >> okay, guys. how you guys doing? good, good, good. >> reporter: you can carry in ody classroom? >> yeah. ah reporter: university of kansas senior vistoria snitstar says she couldn't wait for her 21st birthday, the legal age to usrry on campus. so she took this concealed carry class to prepare. why do you want to be armed here en campus? >> women often fall victim to crimes on campus, whether rapes or assaults. and so i felt like it was upon me to protect myself. >> reporter: kansas is one of ten states that allows public universities students to carry concealed firearms. 16 states ban campus carry, and 23 leave the decision up to each college or university. do you think allowing campus arry is a way to help prevent mass shootings, to protect tiudents if a shooter comes on campus? >> i think it is definitely a deterrent. i really do think that putting tins in the hands of responsible sun owners does make places safer.

>> reporter: kansas' 2017 campus carry law permits students to carry guns in most buildings, including dorms and classrooms. >> they have a gun on them now, a secret gun, i don't know that crey have. nnd so-- >> reporter: you can't ask if they have one. >> i can't ask if they have one and they can't tell me if they have one. >> reporter: legally. 's legally. that's part of the policy. >> reporter: the secrecy of who is armed prompted film professor and oscar-winning screenwriter kevin wilmott to wear this bulletproof vest while teaching. >> i bring it into class. i put it on in class. so, did anybody go to the movies iis week? >> reporter: what do you say to a student who says, professor willmott, it is my second amendment right to be armed." >> they have that right. ent we have always had the common sense to keep it out of dertain places. we've always had the common sense to say, "well, not at church, not at school." >> reporter: we asked professor willmott and victoria to sit down together. are you armed right now? >> i am.

ireally don't see any difference between me carrying half a mile away downtown or on campus. >> well, you know, i think guns, you know, being anywhere on campuses is ultimately a problem. you know, one of the reasons i wear the vest is that i think if people saw people walking around with guns, they'd be horribly hncomfortable. and i just don't think it's the role of a student to-- to kind of jump into the role of rambo and take over a situation. >> i beg to differ. ( laughter ) i think that it's upon myself to protect myself if i were to end up in a less-than-favorable situation. >> one of the great things about doudent life is the freedom you have, and the freedom to kind of be who you are, and to kind of grow and to discover who you are. guns don't make that a better kind of environment. >> if we're talking about freedoms, i think constitutional freedoms come first.

>> reporter: they're allegedly debating how their three-year- old son broke his arm a few weeks earlier. >> reporter: the day before the audio came out, hill said in a statement, "my son's health and happiness is my number one priority." hours later, news of the recording broke, in the midst of the n.f.l.'s celebratory draft, where chiefs g.m. brett veach announced quick action. >> we decided that, at this time and for the foreseeable future, tyreek hill will not take part in any team activities. >> reporter: hill is the most recent chiefs player to be embroiled in an abuse scandal. running back kareem hunt was cut from the team last year for

a glor: we end with a sweet and tender southern barbecue experience. steve hartman serves it up, "on the road." >> reporter: for barbecue lovers, brad's barbecue in oxford, alabama, is heaven on earth, but 80-year-old eleanor baker says her visit here -yrlier this month was especially divine. >> i think it was a god thing. i think god sent me there. >> reporter: you think we needed the example. >> yes. that people care about other people, and how important it is. ( laughs ) er reporter: eleanor is a widow. she lives with her dog, rufus. and although she has a big family, they mostly live out of town. so eleanor was alone the night she went to brad's barbecue. security footage shows her entering, there in the purple,

and at these three young men arrived. they say they were just having a good old time... >> we was all just sitting there just talking. >> reporter: ...when jamario hward noticed eleanor. >> an older woman sitting by herself. >> reporter: jamario said he hates seeing people eat alone. when most of us see someone eating alone, we feel that way, but our sympathy never solves anything. bud jamario really wanted to fix this, so he got up from his table and sat at hers. >> he just came up and said, "i paw you sitting here alone." and he said, "do you mind having sitt company?" >> and she said, "go right ahead. and then i introduced myself, and she introduced herself, and that's kind of how it all got started. >> reporter: they all ended up stving dinner together. r> and it was just a really nice, pleasant evening. sa reporter: what those 20- somethings did that night speaks volumes about their character. but they say it wasn't entirely altruistic. they enjoyed her company as much

as she enjoyed theirs. >> because when we left there, that's all we talked about. >> when you make that kind of lknnection with somebody, it's hard to let it go. >> i already feel like we're her grandkids. >> reporter: so you have room for these guys in your life? >> of course. i'm so glad you all could ma >> reporter: they have all vowed to make room for one another. and, certainly, if eleanor is right, that god played any role in this, it may be to remind us of the joy that awaits just outside the bubbles we live in. >> i used to say when i was younger-- and, i still say today-- like, i'm going to change the world somehow. and i don't know how, because anm not rich. i'm not famous. and i'm not very smart, either. so i can't be the president. but we can show the world that it's all right to be kind, and then, before long, maybe the world will be a much better repr: an. hartman, "on the road," in oxford, alabama. >> glor: that is the "cbs evening news." that was wonderful. i'm jeff glor. have a great weekend. we'll see you on monday.
